Diabetes walk PEThe Global diabetes walk event was held at the North end lake in Port Elizabeth South Africa on Saturday, 23 November 2013. Zports and Diabetes SA together has hosted a fun filled day while creating awareness around the “silent killer”. This event again has proven that adopting an active lifestyle can be fun. Taking part in events like these one become more interested in good health and start making better health choices in everyday living. It is good to see sponsors Pronutro and Accu-Chek getting involve in events like these. Many companies and employers are realizing the importance of their employee following a healthy active lifestyle and are starting to monitor their employees health. Events like these could be a great team building event for them. Type 2 Diabetes is a lifestyle diseaseNot many people are aware that they have a medical condition and in particular diabetes. The build-up of glucose in the bloodstream can happen at any time. According to Jenny Russell, Branch Manager at Diabetes SA in Durban diabetes is preventable and says; “To a large extent, though, this is preventable,” she warned. A survey which was conducted on over 27 000 individuals in 8 000 households across the country, found that; · one out of five participants (18.4%) had impaired glucose tolerance. · the report highlighted the poor state of children's health with 18% of children under 5 years-old already being overweight. “This is closely linked to another of the HSRC’s findings; · almost one out of five participants consumed a diet with a high fat score (18.3%) · and high sugar score (19.7%) · one out of four (25.6%) consumed a diet with a low fruit and vegetable score.
